Track your runs the cheap way: Manually!

You may think tracking your runs manually is not very “geeky” at all.

But with the API of Yahoo! Maps some smart Canadian programmers took the time to write an interface where you can set every track-point after your run!

Today: Runningmap.com

It’s an easy to use site where you just have to search for your city, then you rebuild your run by clicking on the map. You can switch between map view, satellite view and hybrid view. Here you can see how map view and satellite view looks like. Unfortunately the hybrid view wasn’t working for Hamburg (Germany).

One of the best features is, that you can show the elevation of your run. So if you like to run in mountainous areas, this site will definitely be a good choice! Here you can see the graph:

On top you can search for runs created by other users of Runningmap.com! So if you search for “Hamburg” you will probably see an output like this:

And here is the selected run in map view

In the setting on the left menu bar you can switch between miles and the metric system. Runningmap uses the API of Yahoo! Maps, which has not always the most detailled view of small cities, especially in Europe. But with the elevation graph and a database full of runs runningmap.com is a page I would recommend!

And you don’t even have to register! Saving the run is easy and you also get a permalink if you want to see the track later. There is also a service, similar to Runningmap.com which uses the Google Maps API but requires a free registration. You can find it here. But in my opinion Runningmaps.com is the winner when it comes to usability and design.
